Talking to journalists ahead of the 2019-20 ACB restart, Iberostar Tenerife head coach Txus Vidorreta was asked to comment on his team missing from the recently announced list of 2020-21 7DAYS EuroCup participants. The 53-year-old Spaniard stressed that the Basketball Champions League is the place to be for his side.
“It isn’t about where you are absent, but where you are,” he replied, “We are in our competition, which is the Basketball Champions League.”
Tenerife went all the way to the top in the inaugural BCL season and has remained a prominent member of FIBA’s premier club competition since launching successful runs. The Spanish outlet is still involved in the 2019-20 season planned to restart in September.
“We have argued that, in this situation, it is better to stay where you feel comfortable,” he explained and furthered, “The 3rd, 4th, and 5th of the ACB regular season prior to what may occur in the final stage, will play in the Basketball Champions League. The EuroCup can’t say the same.”
As for the 2019-20 ACB campaign, action in the Spanish league will resume on June 17 with the 12 top teams prior to the suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic coming back split into two groups of six teams each.
