Ilias Zouros has been the frontrunner to join back-to-back Basketball Champions League champions San Pablo Burgos after the departure of Joan Penarroya, though he will not be able to take over the Spanish team’s bench.
According to Eurohoops sources, Zouros declined to join Burgos as his job with the Georgian national team requires a full-time commitment, that wouldn’t align with other obligations. On top of that, the Spanish Liga Endesa does not allow coaches to be at the bench of both a club and a national team at the same time.
Zouros, who most recently coached Peristeri in the BCL, had been in contact with the Spanish club once again in 2019, though the 55-year-old coach had already committed to the Greek side and did not want to break the agreement.
Zouros has gone through top-level European benches in recent years, such as Olympiacos, Zalgiris and Anadolu Efes, as well as the Greek national team.
