Rytas Vilnius made perhaps the biggest upset so far this season by taking down the reigning back-to-back champions Hereda San Pablo Burgos with 87-69 on the scoreboard.
Ivan Buva led the charge for the winning squad, which featured six players in double-digits, with 19 points and nine rebounds while Vaidas Kariniauskas and Speedy Smith scored 14 each.
On the opposing side, Tyrus McGee banked in game-high 20 points and was the only double-digit scorer for the Spaniards. Alex Renfroe helped out with nine points, six rebounds, four assists.
The two teams were fairly equal throughout the game with the exception of the second quarter which ultimately decided the outcome. Rytas made a 15-4 run to close the first half and go up 49-30, the gap from which Burgos couldn’t recover.
Points off turnovers (26 vs 14) and second-chance points (28 vs 14) were the deciding factors in Rytas’s favor.
Things have gotten far more interesting with this outcome in Group H as now all teams in Group H have 1-1 records. Besiktas managed to bounce back and get a comeback win over Oldenburg the same night.
