Hakan Demir has parted ways with Tofas, the team announced Tuesday.

Demir, 52, took over the head coaching responsibilities succeeding Orhun Ene at the team based in Turkey about one year ago.

The Elazig-born play-caller started the 2021-22 season leading the Turkish club on the top of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season Group F standings over SIG Strasbourg, Filou Oostende, and Kalev/Cramo. At 3-1, Tofas is set to visit the Belgian and Estonian teams to complete the double-legged round-robin schedule. The top seed will progress directly to the Round of 16, while the next two teams will settle for a second chance to advance via the Play-Ins, set to premiere in FIBA’s top European club competition.

A much more unkind situation evolved at the domestic level as his side was forced down to 4-4 in the 2021-22 BSL Regular Season after three defeats in a row, including last Sunday’s Round 8 home fixture opposite Gaziantep.

Under his guidance, Tofas made its BCL debut reaching the final 16 teams of the 2020-21 season. The 4-2 run in Group B clinched the Playoffs berth but the 2-4 W-L record in Group I was not enough for a spot in the Final Eight. At the domestic level, the team ranked fourth in the BSL Regular Season but was suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Besiktas Icrypex in the quarterfinals of the Playoffs.

Demir had coached Bandirma in the Champions League through the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
