Ahmet Caki and Tofas agreed to part ways, the team announced Tuesday.
Caki, 46, guided his side to ten wins in his first 14 games in charge but from there recorded only four wins in the last 15 outings of the 2021-22 season. Last November, he had returned for a second stint at the team based in Bursa following the first run from 2012 to 2014.
Under his guidance, Tofas reached the Quarterfinals of the Basketball Champions League but was swept by Lenovo Tenerife. The Bursa outlet had topped Group F of the Regular Season thanks to a 4-2 record and ranked second in Group J of the Round of 16 behind yet another 4-2 run prior to colliding with the team based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on its own way to the second BCL title in team history.
The disappointing exit was a step forward compared to the first display in FIBA’s top European club continental competition. Introducing itself to the BCL, Tofas survived the Regular Season with four wins in six showings but the ensuing 2-4 W-L tally ranked last in Round of 16 Group I.
Back to the 2021-22 season but at the domestic level, the 16-14 W-L tally was good enough for the ninth spot. The team fell short of a berth in the BSL Playoffs for the first time since reclaiming a spot in the top-flight division of Turkey in 2016.
Moving forward and preparing for the 2022-23 season, Tofas will be looking for a suitable replacement.
