Marcelinho Huertas has signed a two-year contract extension with Lenovo Tenerife, the team announced Wednesday.
Huertas, 39, recently revealed his intentions to keep playing at the highest level after becoming champion and Final Four MVP in the Basketball Champions League. Shortly following his in-depth interview with Eurohoops, his team of the last three seasons announced the contract extension keeping him in the Canary Islands for two additional years.
After completing the 2021-22 campaign, Tenerife extended the contract of head coach Txus Vidorreta until the end of the 2023-24 season. From the play-caller to the floor general, Huertas followed with a two-year contract extension of his own.
Prior to launching his fourth campaign as a member of Tenerife, the Brazil international is expected to play in the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup and the upcoming windows of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Americas Qualifiers. As for his efforts through the 2021-22 season, he produced 10.5 points, 7.3 assists, and 1.6 rebounds per BCL game en route to a spot in the Second Star Lineup and the MVP award in the season-ending Final Four. Adding 12.6 points, 6.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per Liga Endesa contest complete the picture.
Coming off two years in his second stint at Baskonia, Huertas joined Tenerife in 2019. One year later, he extended his contract until the conclusion of the 2021-22 season and committed to two more seasons, after upping his total of games played as a member of the San Cristobal de La Laguna to 159. Further back, he spent a couple of seasons in the NBA playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. Former teams in Europe include FC Barcelona, Fortitudo Bologna, Bilbao, and Joventut.
Apart from capturing the second BCL title in team history, Vidorreta’s side made the ACB Playoffs claiming the fifth seed in the bracket, and was edged out by Joventut in the Quarterfinals’ best-of-three series.
