BAXI Manresa signed three players in less than a week, but bad news arrived after the medical scans of Jake Layman. A herniated disc was detected, and the Spanish club terminated the contract of the American small forward.
“After considering the possibilities of treatment, the player has unilaterally decided to undergo surgery in the United States. The club and Jake Layman have agreed to terminate the contract,” as stated in Manresa’s official report.
Manresa signed Layman before adding Frankie Ferrari and center Matthias Tass. Unfortunately, the former Minnesota Timberwolves player won’t debut on European soil with Pedro Martinez’s team.
Layman was drafted with the 47th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on draft night. He spent three seasons in Portland before being dealt to the Timberwolves.
In his last season with Minnesota, he averaged 2,4 points in just 6,8 minutes of game time. His best season in the NBA was 2019-20 in Minnesota when he averaged 9,1 points.
Jake Layman was in advanced talks with Panathinaikos recently, however, the Greek club changed plans and signed Dwayne Bacon.
It’s still to be seen if Manresa will go for another signing after the deal with the American small forward fell through after discovering an injury.
Manresa has a perfect 3-0 score in the Basketball Champions League but is sitting in last place in the ACB League with only one victory after seven rounds (1-6).
