Coming all the way back from a 19-point deficit, Darussafaka Lassa outlasted UCAM Murcia, 105-104, in the second overtime of a nail-biter in Volkswagen Arena Tuesday night.
Chicago-born guard Matt Mooney tallied a game-high 27 points, including the game-winning layup with 16.4 seconds remaining in the second extra period of the exciting Basketball Champions League Round of 16 game. Travis Trice misfired the last opportunity at the opposite end and Dacka stayed alive in Group L.
Both teams missed huge chances to seal the deal in the fourth quarter and the first overtime ending up at 86-86 and 93-93, respectively. But all failed last-ditch efforts fall shy of the Universitarios conceding 34 points in the fourth quarter to evaporate a 19-point lead.
Experienced British center Gabriel Olaseni chipped in 17 points in the game in Istanbul that was originally part of the Gameday 3 schedule. Aaron White added 14 points and Can Korkmaz recorded 13 points assisting Selcuk Ernak’s side off the board and up to 1-3 after improving to 9-10 in Turkey’s BSL with an overtime win against Aliaga Petkim Spor on the road Saturday.
Thad McFadden packing 25 points and Trice ending up with 24 points were not enough for the team guided by Sito Alonso. The ACB participant, sitting at 8-13 in the 2022-23 edition of Spain’s Liga Endesa, dropped to 2-2 in the four-team group but retained the tiebreaker advantage over Darussafaka thanks to the win by a margin of nine points in the reverse fixture.
