A new head coach is in place for SIG Strasbourg following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

Massimo Cancellieri inked a two-year contract to become the new head coach, the team announced Monday morning.

Succeeding fellow Italian play-caller Luca Banchi, Cancellieri himself will remain in France following two campaigns with Limoges CSP. Joining the Basketball Champions League lasting original, he is likely to keep coaching in FIBA’s top-tier club continental competition after reaching the Round of 16 of the 2022-23 campaign with Limoges.

“Being the SIG Strasbourg coach means a lot to me and represents a step toward the top level. I have been following Strasbourg and the team’s progress for many years and I am delighted to be part of this historic club,” he commented on his new job, “I arrive wanting to display my passion for basketball and I want it to be felt in the identity of the team, and also everyone involved with the club. I want to write a chapter in the history of SIG Strasbourg and eventually put my own signature.”

Banchi, 57, was named head coach of Strasbourg in November, replacing Finnish Lassi Tuovi. His efforts concluded in a narrow elimination to future champion Telekom Baskets Bonn in the BCL Quarterfinals and two close losses to AS Monaco prompting a Quarterfinals exit from France’s Betclic Elite LNB Pro A.

“Taking over from Luca is an honor for me,” said the new Strasbourg boss on Banchi, “I want to continue the good work he did last season.”

Opening the offseason, expected to be busy for Strasbourg, the team based in Alsace is set to build the squad for the 2023-24 season.
