Just a few days ago, the Basketball Champions League officially announced with a press release that Hapoel Holon will play its home games in the European competition at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall of Athens, being hosted by AEK.
However, due to the strong reaction by a group of black-and-yellow fans, things could change for the Israeli participant. The Greek club, in fact, is now in constant contact with the Basketball Champions League in order to withdraw its original invitation, not permitting the purple-and-yellow side to play on its home court.
Hapoel Holon, who lost Chris Johnson and Joe Ragland in the summer transfer market, debuted in this year’s Basketball Champions League with a win in Germany against Telekom Baskets Bonn. They’re set to play in Athens on 14/11 against Rio Breogan.
While Hapoel Jerusalem will play at Belgrade’s Aleksandar Nikolic Hall – just like Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague – in the BCL, it’s now unknown where their Israeli rivals will play. AEK’s home court is currently available on 20% of its current capacity due to last year’s assault on Hapoel Jerusalem fans.
