AEK’s Joan Plaza said they “did nothing yet” to his players

Following on the episodes with Derthona’s Kyle Weems and referee Paulo Marques, Basketball Champions League published a new episode of the “Mic’d Up” series, featuring AEK’s Spanish head coach Joan Plaza, who joined the team this summer.

Unlike other episodes in which the protagonists of the series were put on a microphone during games to capture what’s behind the action, this time the Greek black-and-yellow team’s head coach was mic’d up during the whole Game Day of the clash against Dinamo Sassari, beating them 110-79.

AEK Athens is currently one of the only two teams that already qualified for the Basketball Champions League alongside Unicaja Malaga. The Greek black-and-yellow team, however, is the only team up 5-0 in the Regular Season, being unbeaten so far.

Despite such an achievement, Joan Plaza is making sure his players stay humble. “Put in your mind that we did nothing yet. Let’s work, let’s focus”, he said before that game, in which the Italian opponents were destroyed by the Greeks. “When life gives you one opportunity, you need to grab it. You understand the meaning?”, he then asked.

Bringing in several new pieces during the latest transfer market, AEK has reinforced itself with Jordan McRae, Mindaugas Kuzminskas, Justin Tillman, and Mfioundu Kabengele among others. Ben McLemore, who came to Athens for his first overseas chapter, recently left the team.
