Two players are out for Lenovo Tenerife in Game 3 of the best-of-three series versus Tofas. Besides Jaime Fernandez (right knee surgery), Aaron Doornekamp was sidelined one day before the win-or-go-home contest.
Doornekamp, 38, was diagnosed with a peroneal tendon tear in his left foot and will not require surgery, the team announced on Tuesday. He has been ruled out for the Basketball Champions League meeting with the Bursa outfit in Santiago Martin Arena on Wednesday and is expected to miss more games.
“An upsetting setback, like Jaime’s. We are going to a key game without two important players,” noted play-caller Txus Vidorreta, “We need Tim Abromaitis and Edgar Vicedo to step up to cover for Aaron. We also need the help of players like Elgin Cook and Ilimane Diop in his position.”
Even with a potential Final Four berth for the team located in the Canary Islands, the two-time BCL champion cleared for potential action in Belgrade is uncertain. A return date will be determined upon further medical evaluation.
Making his way to 14 contests in his sixth Champions League campaign, the veteran forward averaged 6.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per appearance. With 6.9 points per game in Spain’s Liga Endesa, his efforts helped build a 19-10 record, three games safe inside the Playoffs zone with five fixtures remaining on the schedule.
Fernandez, 30, was already ruled out for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. He underwent surgery on Monday.
