In surprising fashion, Kyle Guy announced his retirement from basketball in the last few days, entering a new chapter of his career by becoming the Virginia Cavaliers as an athlete development mentor and special assistant.

Now, the 26-year-old shooting guard reflected on his decision, talking to Fieldhouse Files by Scott Agness. “I just felt in my gut that I wanted to do something else. I felt that during my first year overseas. I was like, “I’m in my prime, I’m so good right now, I can’t walk away”. Literally, this past spring was the best I have ever been. And so I just kept thinking, “There’s no way that I can walk away”, he said.

The former Joventut Badalona, Panathinaikos, and Tenerife players commented on the toughness of overseas basketball. “Overseas is tough. It’s a tough grind. Ten months is a long time [away from home]. I’ve got a lot of stuff going on outside of basketball that is also important to me. At the end of the day, I don’t know if any of that stuff was the real reason”, Kyle Guy continued.

“I just don’t have that same fire that I normally do playing. So I want to re-center myself and put that energy towards something else”, the former Miami Heat player also said, keeping the door open for the future if the love for the game comes back once again to the 26-year-old athlete.

Kyle Guy opted out of his contract with Tenerife a few weeks ago, and everybody thought it would have been to come back to the EuroLeague, having tasted it only for a short span with Panathinaikos. Since joining the Basketball Champions League, he led it in scoring with 21.5 points per game over 11 games.
