Olek Balcerowski completes move from Panathinaikos to Unicaja Malaga

Aleksander Balcerowski signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season with Unicaja, pending medicals, the team announced on Monday.

With Omer Yurtseven joining a frontcourt already composed of the dominant Mathias Lessort and the backup Kostas Antetokounmpo, there couldn’t be space for Balcerowski in Panathinaikos. But a new destination is now waiting for him, marking his return to Spain.

The Polish center reaching an agreement with the Malaga outfit was reported by Diario SUR’s Juan Calderón. For the new star on Ibon Navarro’s team, this will be a comeback in the ACB, having played with Gran Canaria from 2018 to 2023.

Not able to find huge minutes in the 2023-24 EuroLeague with the reigning champions, the 23-year-old Polish center put up 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds over only 7:36 minutes of playing time per game last season with Ergin Ataman’s Panathinaikos.

Unicaja Malaga won last year’s Basketball Champions League and was able to keep the vast majority of its core for the 2024-25 season too, being competitive in both International competition and the ACB.

Before Olek Balcerowski signed with the then EuroLeague champions in the summer of 2023, he was named EuroCup Rising Star twice, winning the award for the 2020-21 and 2022-23 seasons. In 2023, he also won the BKT EuroCup with the Spanish side, averaging 8.6 points per game.
