You wouldn’t want to be one of the Derthona fans who made their way to Manresa to celebrate the Italians’ successful run in the BCL Regular Season, possibly extending the winning streak to six games.
There was only one possibility for the Italian team to lose first place in Group G and miss out on going straight to the Round of 16: lose by 17 points or more to BAXI Manresa on the road.
Well, Diego Ocampo’s team managed to overcome all odds, winning by 18 points (100-82) at home to make it directly to the Sweet 16, taking away from Derthona the 1st position in the group.
The former Derthona guard Retin Obasohan was particularly crucial in achieving this result, contributing with a double-double of 25 points and 10 assists.
He was followed by the 2006-born prodigy Mario Saint-Supery and the team’s leader Derrick Alston Jr., who both added 16 points for the 2021-22 Basketball Champions League runner-up.
Walter De Raffaele’s team will now have to go through the Play-Ins in back-to-back seasons in the Basketball Champions League. 21 points and 7 rebounds by Arturs Strautins weren’t enough tonight.
