Willy Hernangomez has reached an agreement with Unicaja, signing a one-year contract.
Reported by Diario Sur, and on Tuesday confirmed by Unicaja, the Spaniard will continue his career in his home country, but instead of the EuroLeague he will be playing in the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
Per press release: “Unicaja Baloncesto has reached an agreement to bring in Madrid-born center Willy Hernangómez for the upcoming season. The 32-year-old, 2.10-meter tall interior arrives in Málaga after an extensive career in the NBA and EuroLeague, which has made him a dominant player in the Spanish National Team.
The club has reached an agreement to incorporate the Spanish international center Guillermo ‘Willy’ Hernangómez (32 years, 2.10 meters) for the upcoming season. The Madrid player, who comes from Barça, lands in Málaga as one of the most prominent national interiors of the last decade. His experience at the highest level, his talent, and his leadership with the Spanish National Team make him a notable reinforcement for the team.
Willy Hernangómez stands out as a center with a great ability to play near the rim, remarkable footwork, and notable skill to finish with both hands. He also combines a great rebounding instinct, the ability to create advantages in the low post, and good vision to assist from the paint. His physical presence and knowledge of the game allow him to be an offensive reference and provide solidity under the rim.”
Hernangomez was left without a contract extension at Barcelona, who have embarked on a rebuilding process, and Unicaja took advantage of this situation to secure an important signing.
The Madrid-born center has accepted the offer from the Malaga club to play there next season after turning down two other offers he had on the table, one of them from PAOK.
The Spanish international will thus be the replacement for Aleksander Balcerowski, who signed for Barcelona a few days ago. Unicaja have managed to convince Hernangomez after several days of negotiations and after improving their initial offer.
Hernangomez arrives at Unicaja at 32 years of age and with the approval of Txus Vidorreta. The fact that the Basque coach has given the green light to his signing has been key, as has the fact that the two already know each other from their time together with the Spanish national team at EuroBasket 2015 and the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, which ended with a gold and a bronze.
