EWE Baskets Oldenburg tested undefeated AS Monaco at home, but the French team was able to grab another victory 84-78. The team coached by Zvezda Mitrovic is now standing on a 12-0 record in the Basketball Champions League.
Oldenburg was just one point behind with 6 minutes left on the clock. Christopher Evans and D.J. Cooper hit back-to-back triples and Elmedin Kikanovic scored an and-one as Monaco made 9-0 run that sealed the deal.
Monaco built an 8-point lead after the first quarter (24-16) winning the first half with a comfortable lead 44-29.
The hosts weren’t ready to give up that easily and bounced back. They won the third quarter 25-17 keeping things interesting as they reduced Monaco’s lead to only one point (61-60).
The Key: Once again Monaco’s defense helped them when the game was on the line. They protected their paint allowing Oldenburg to score only 11 points in the last period of the game.
The Star: Paul Lacombe was the man that kept Monaco safe tonight with 20 points (8/12 from the field), 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. He was everywhere.
35-year-old veteran Ricky Paulding was once again the top scorer of Oldenburg with 23 points.
With this loss Oldenburg dropped to a 7-5 record, however, they have already booked their tickets for the next round.
