Panathinaikos and FIBA have been engaging in dialogue regarding the Greek club’s potential participation in next season’s Basketball Champions League, according to Eurohoops’ sources.
The two sides are expected to extensively and thoroughly discuss the topic in the upcoming Basketball Champions League Final Four, that will be held in Athens from 4 to 6 of May.
Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos expressed his intention for the club to leave EuroLeague and join a FIBA competition, following the latest EuroLeague shareholders’ meeting. that took place in Madrid, Spain. Giannakopoulos exited the meeting before its conclusion, following the rejection of his proposals by the rest of the 15 EuroLeague clubs.
According to Panathinaikos, what took place during the meeting has created a “definite split” between the club and EuroLeague.
Given Giannakopoulos’ intention, Panathinaikos and FIBA have already begun studying a schedule according to which the Greens will play in the Basketball Champions League next season.
Panathinaikos is the most celebrated European club in the last 20 years with six EuroLeague titles from 1996 to 2011.
