Heading to the inaugural FIBA European Women’s Basketball Summit, the Mentoring Program for Female Coaches and Referees visited Belgrade and Barcelona.
Per the press release: “It has been an action-packed period for the coaches participating in the Empowerment of Female Coaches and Referee program, with a number of mentoring visits completed in February across Europe as part of the year-long project.
Co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Sports Program, the project began in September last year after six coaches were chosen as part of the selection process at the Women’s Summit in Postojna in July, 2021.
The most recent visit was to Barcelona from February 9-13 with a highlight including a two-hour exchange with coach Aito Garcia Reneses during a morning individual session with the young talents of Joventut de Badalona.
Dace Cinite of Latvia, Martina Gargantini of Italy, Konstanze Wegner of Germany and Camille Aubert of France were the four coaches from the program in attendance as they also shadowed Silvia Font – coach of Siglo XXI, the Elite Girls Academy in Barcelona.
Earlier this month, the second visit of the program was to Belgrade during preparations of Serbia’s national team ahead of their FIBA Basketball Women’s World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournaments from February 1-5.
Mireia Capdevila of Spain was in attendance with the opportunity to shadow mentor Marina Maljkovic and her staff for their practices, whilst also heading to the MM Girls Academy.
There was also further virtual sessions led by French legend Isabelle Fijalkowsky in partnership with the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) that took place in December and January. This was part of the Camp for Tall Players – both men and women – that was organized by the FFBB in Bourges.
The Mentoring Program is set to conclude at the Women’s Basketball Summit in Postojna in July 2022.”
