The 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2022 continental championships were among the main topics of the latest FIBA Executive Committee meeting.
Per the press release: “The FIBA Executive Committee convened by video conference today for their second meeting of 2022. With a very busy calendar of events coming up over the next few months, including the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and FIBA AmeriCup 2022, the meeting had an event-packed agenda.

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022
With tip-off to FIBA’s flagship women’s event less than one month away, a progress report was received on the final preparations for the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022. Various programs and initiatives are underway to ensure the 2022 Women’s World Cup will have the biggest impact to date.
FIBA U17 Basketball World Cups 2022
The Executive Committee received reports on the recent FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 in Spain and the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 in Hungary which took place in July. Both World Cups were successfully executed, with hosts being part of FIBA’s multi-year hosting model. FIBA has in the meantime launched the bidding process based on the same model for World Youth events for the period 2024-26.
FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and Qualifiers
Preparations continue for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 across the three host countries. Reports were received on this progress along with the successful third Qualifier window that was played in June. With the return to home and away format for the Americas and very high attendance numbers across the globe, 60 teams have now qualified for the second round of Qualifiers which will take place from August 24 to 30.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 has celebrated various milestones along with the announcement of JIP, the new World Cup mascot. This week will also see the One Year to Go celebrations take place in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
FIBA Continental Cups 2022
The Executive Committee heard reports on the recently played FIBA Asia Cup 2022 in Indonesia in July, and the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and FIBA AmeriCup 2022 which will both be played in September.
Club Competitions
Updates were presented to the Executive Committee also on the upcoming seasons of the Basketball Champions League (BCL), Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) and the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The BCL Regular Season will tip off on October 3, with Qualifiers taking place from September 21 to 25. BCLA will start its fourth season in December and season 3 of the BAL will take place next year.

Progress reports were given on the current 3×3 National Team Competitions and Professional Circuit, which will combine for a staggering number of more than 120 FIBA 3×3 events this year. The next event which starts today is the FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, taking place in Debrecen, Hungary from August 23 to 28.”
