President of the Spanish basketball federation since July 2016, Jorge Garbajosa has decided to leave his role to try going for the head of FIBA Europe, according to Marca.
The election for voting the next FIBA Europe president will be held on May 20, and Jorge Garbajosa will probably face as his fiercest enemy the former president of the French basketball federation Jean Pierre Siutat.
In case of the election, the President of the Spanish basketball federation will be forced to leave his current position and call the newest elections in three-months time. On that occasion, the current number 3 of the federation Elisa Aguilar is the main candidate for the presidency.
Until now, the FIBA Europe President has been the Turkish Turgay Demirel, who didn’t have the most exciting of times in that position.
During the Jorge Garbajosa era, with Sergio Scariolo on the bench, Spain won the 2019 FIBA World Cup and EuroBasket 2022, while getting a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2017 and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In Tokyo 2020, Spain arrived 6th.
