As officially announced, Jorge Garbajosa has been elected as the new president of FIBA Europe and will serve in that role for the next four years.
The Spanish basketball legend won the election against the French Basketball Federation president Jean-Pierre Siutat in the vote to succeed the Turkish Turgay Demirel.
Demirel leaves his post with the title of FIBA Europe Honorary President after nine years at the helm of the European organization.
Former Spanish national team player, with 167 international appearances and winner of six medals with the national team, will immediately take the reins from Demirel and end his term as the president of the Spanish Federation after more than seven years.
Garbajosa will have three months to call elections for the top Spanish Federation post, and as El Pais reported, Elisa Aguilar, a former Spanish international with 222 appearances and six medals with the national team and currently directing Federation Competitions, is the leading candidate to succeed him.
