The Spanish basketball legend, Jorge Garbajosa, was elected as the new president of FIBA Europe and will be leaving his position as the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation in the next three months.
In his first statements since the election, Garbajosa spoke about his first objectives in a new role, highlighting the “union” in European basketball.
“The world is changing, 3×3 needs a boost, Europe has to reinforce the international leadership, women’s basketball has to be given a significant boost; it is a product with a brutal growth margin. All the federations have to grow together; Europe has to exercise collaborative leadership,” Garbajosa said.
Former Spanish national team player, the winner of six international medals, insists his first goal will be to “build bridges with all levels, and trying to find agreement with the EuroLeague.”
“A global agreement, always respecting the national teams and the domestic leagues. My slogan was ‘Better together,’ I want to do it in Europe around a joint project. Defending the interests of Europe and growth, but always with extreme loyalty. The best way to grow is collaborating,” the new FIBA Europe president stated.
