FIBA and representatives of its European national federations, leagues and ULEB (Union of European Leagues of Basketball) met in Munich on Thursday as part of their ongoing discussion about the future of the European club competitions.

The meeting focused on examining different aspects of how the future of club competition should be structured.

All sides stressed the importance of strong European club competitions based on sports principles, allowing for the continuous development of national leagues which should remain the cornerstone of club basketball in Europe.

Two working groups were set up to scrutinise the details with regards to the competition and the governance of future club competitions.

FIBA’s Executive Committee is expected to discuss the results of the reports of the working groups in its next meeting on 19-20 January.

FIBA confirmed last month that it is pushing ahead with the launch of a Basketball Champions League starting with the 2016-17 season.
