In a surprising turn of events in the FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers, Cuba achieved a historic victory by defeating Team USA for the first time in the competition, marking the end of a streak spanning over 50 years.
Center Pedro Bombino led the Cuban team to an 81-67 triumph, leaving all teams in Group D tied with 1-1 scores after two rounds.
Bombino contributed 19 points to the victory, just three days after the US team comfortably defeated his side 100-79 in their initial matchup.
Maccabi Tel Aviv’s center Jasiel Rivero delivered an outstanding performance, coming close to a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Former Panathinaikos player, now with UCAM Murcia, Howard Sent-Roos, added six points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
G League players RaiQuan Gray, with 17 points, and Jahmius Ramsey, with 14 points, led Team USA. The roster also featured NBA veterans like Elfrid Payton (five points), Jordan Bell (four points), and Stanley Johnson (seven points).
