Despite the gap between Euroleague and FIBA, after the meeting of the FIBA Europe Executive Committee, the press release on the matter speaks about the need of the continuation of talks after the offer made by FIBA which was ” an appropriate and generous compromise”.
The text is the following: “The FIBA Europe Executive Committee which met in Munich, Germany on Saturday, 14 May, discussed the recent developments with regard to the European club competitions landscape. The Committee in particular considered the following matters:
It reviewed the responses by 16 federations who, following the decision of the Board of FIBA Europe on 20 March, had either lost the right to participate in European senior men national team competitions or were cautioned about the possibility of forfeiting such right. All 16 federations have reacted in support of FIBA Europe’s decision and against the anti-competitive practices of Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA). A full report will be given to the Board of FIBA Europe during its next session in Dublin, Ireland on 27 May, for further decisions. In the meantime, FIBA Europe’s administration has been asked to continue monitoring the developments on a weekly basis and report immediately to the Executive Committee of any changes in the situation in the various countries.
It endorsed the general framework of the recent collaboration proposal offered by FIBA/FIBA Europe to ECA as an appropriate and generous compromise for the benefit of European basketball and expressed its hope that discussions with ECA can continue along those lines.
It expressed its support to Basketball Champions League (BCL SA), the innovative partnership between leagues and FIBA, and declared its satisfaction with the preparations for the upcoming first season of BCL and FIBA Europe Cup, as evidenced by the high number of clubs (69) from 19 countries that have so far pre-registered for the BCL season. It also asked BCL SA and the FIBA Europe Administration respectively to finalize these preparations in order to provide a stable environment for national federations and clubs in view of their own preparations for the upcoming events and club competition season”.
