Continuing the recent tradition of multiple hosts and returning to the country which hosted one of the most historic tournaments, FIBA Europe announced that Eurobasket 2021 will be played in Germany, Italy, Georgia, and the Czech Republic.
Germany will hosts also the final round of the event, bringing back memories from 1993, when the German national team playing at home won the gold medal, a feat that remains unmatched in German basketball’s history, despite the emergence of Dirk Nowitzki.
Prague (Czech Republic), Tbilisi (Georgia), Italy (Milan) and Cologne (Germany) will host the four first phase groups and Berlin will host the final round of the tournament. The Eurobasket 2021 will be held between 17 and 29 August 2021.
It’s the first since it was agreed for the tournament to take place every four years, with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, via qualification “windows”.
Estonia, Hungary, and Slovenia were also candidates to host the event, but they missed the cut.
FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel commented: “We are extremely happy with today’s decision to continue our tradition of multi-hosting. The 2021 edition will bring both experience and new ideas with Germany already hosting the EuroBasket four times, most recently in the Group Phase of the 2015 edition, and Georgia coming in as a first time organizer. All four co-hosts are passionate basketball nations.”
FIBA EuroBasket 2021 will take place in the month of September, which will be the first since it was agreed to take place every four years, rather than two. The FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers will be played across three windows in February and November 2020 and then February 2021.
Meanwhile, Spain and France will be the co-hosts of Women’s Eurobasket 2021
