Greek national team guard Tyler Dorsey expressed his amazement with the fact Giannis Antetokounmpo was the only player from his squad to attempt a free throw during the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers game against Serbia.
“Giannis shot 10-14 free throws. No other player from my team shot any free throws,” Dorsey said after his team’s overtime loss. He finished with 16 points, including scoring the triple that forced the extra period. “For me that’s eye-opening. I don’t know what’s going on but the film of the game has to be reviewed. Giannis can’t be the only one to shoot free throws on our team. There’s zero. Nobody else shot a free throw.”
“I don’t know what it means,” Dorsey added after a question by a reporter. “That’s on the refs. We don’t decide the calls out there. I’m just looking at the stats sheet and I’m just surprised. I’m just very surprised. How many games are there where only one player shoots free throws from a team? I haven’t seen any game in my career.”
Dorsey was asked if he believes that Greece lost because of that. “No,” the Dallas Mavericks guard replied. “I’m just saying it’s surprising. If you look at the stats sheet in any game… where do you find this? If you find it let me know. I’ll be very surprised.”
Before his comments on the free throws, Dorsey mentioned the following in his opening statement:
“We had a hard-fought game. We battled out there. It was a great atmosphere. Our first official game. I’m proud of everybody who went out there and put it on the line. We had a chance in overtime and we just came up short. It was a difficult game. We were on a roll, we were trying to fight, we didn’t get a lot of calls but were battling. At the end of the day we’re going to improve on the small details we made mistakes on. They scored a lot of baskets in the paint. That’s when they got most of their baskets. We will continue, we’ll get better. We got another game on Sunday and we’ll try to bounce back.”
