Hot on the heels of a Eurobasket bronze medal, coach Gordon Herbert talked to the German basketball federation website about his recent trip to the USA and his meeting with the German NBA players who are pretty much all interested in playing with the national team in the upcoming FIBA World Cup.

However, Herbert clarified the situation with the Lakers’ break-out star Austin Reaves. There were reports about Reaves securing a German passport and being interested in competing with the German national team, alongside his Lakers’ teammate Dennis Schroder.

According to Herbert, this was too good to be true.

As he explained in the interview, Herbert admitted that more than a year ago he contacted the player, but since then, there was no communication: “At that time I had a short conversation with him and further conversations with his agent. But it was not yet clear whether he would play for us. Later on, I read in the press that he really wants to play for Germany”.

That made Herbert try to contact the players while he was in the US and meeting with Schroder. But things didn’t go Germany’s way. “I contacted Austin by SMS and called him, but I did not receive an answer,” the coach explained.

With this in mind, it seems more than possible that Bayern’s Nick Weiler-Babb will be the naturalized player of Germany in the FIBA World Cup.
