MANILA, Philippines – South Sudan had a FIBA World Cup debut to remember, living thousands of emotions until the end of overtime against Puerto Rico. Despite the loss against the Caribbean team, Carlik Jones was on fire for the African team, putting up a double-double of 35 points and 11 assists, adding 6 rebounds and shooting 12/22 FG and 8/9 FT.
In the mixed zone after his majestic performance, the Windy City Bulls guard commented on the game. “We took a tough loss, we were up by 5 points with maybe three or four minutes. We played hard but we just have to tighten up on details”, he first said before answering whether the inexperience could have caused problems.
“I guess you can say that, I don’t know. It’s our first game in the World Cup, but it’s all about small things. It happens, we have to be together”, Carlik Jones added. “You can’t get too up, you can’t get too low. The game is never over. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t. We have to focus on China”, he added.
The 25-year-old player took also some time to praise the hundreds of South Sudan fans in the stands of the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “We appreciate you guys, you showed made love. You showed up, you cheered, and we appreciate you. I ask you to stick with us because we still have a lot in the tank. Thank you!”, Carlik Jones finally stated.
One of the most exciting matchups during the game was between Tremont Waters and Carlik Jones. “I played against him in the G League, to see him continue to grow it’s promising for him”, the Puertorican guard said in the post-game press conference about his opponent.
