Canada accomplished their main goal: to win the first World Cup medal. They had hoped for gold, but couldn’t get past Serbia in the semifinal. However, they defeated the USA in a thrilling game to secure a bronze medal.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a fantastic tournament and was a true leader of the Canadian team. He believes the experience at the World Cup will benefit him in the upcoming NBA season.
“I think this whole tournament will help me be ready for the next season. I’ll be in shape, I’ve played basketball, so it won’t be as much of an adjustment next season,” Shai said after the win over the USA.
He seems satisfied with the bronze in the end and hopes the story of this Canadian team will inspire many youngsters in Canada.
“We are happy. I hope we inspired some kids back home. That’s why we do it, to show them that if you work hard, everything is possible.”
Canada also secured their place at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, where Shai and his teammates will aim for the gold.
“We’ll try to win the Olympics. I’m confident; we have a really good group. The more we play together, the better we’ll be, and I’m excited.“
