In a shocking turn of events one team which had “locked” a wildcard and one top contender have reportedly withdraw their interest to play in the upcoming FIBA World Cup. As Eurohoops reported earlier, essentially one “free ticket” was left, but the situation is now different according to Spanish daily newspaper “El Mundo Deportivo”.

In a report signed by veteran sportswriter Vladimir Stankovic, both Russia and China have allegedly withdraw their bid from the race just before its finish. At this point there is no official confirmation and the reasons behind such a move are unclear for both countries. Still, Russian federation has some internal issues to take care because after its recent elections and China remains a mystery, specially after the coaching change that is expected.

However, with those two countries out, Greece should be considered a lock for a wildcard and according to “El Mundo Deportivo” Finland and Venezuela are fighting for the last spot. While Finland is making a late big push, according to Eurohoops sources Qatar and Canada are also in the race.
