The first day of FIBA World Cup is over and Eurohoops presents the important numbers of the premier. Those include great offensive and defensive performances, surprises and disappointments, odds and ends of the stats sheets!

  • New Zealand’s point guard, Corey Webster, attempted 22 FG in 25 minutes, almost one per minute. Philippines’ center, Andray Blatche, attempted two more (24 FG) but in 41 minutes!
  • Puerto Rico had just 5 assists, while on the same game Argentina’s point guard, Pablo Prigioni, had 10!
  • Korea attempted the most thre point shots (32), Greece was the most efficient (54%, 13/24 3p) and Finland had the worst numbers in the same category (19%, 4/21 3p)!
  • The bomber! Greece’s forward, Kostas Kaimakoglou, was really hot. Without a doubt, he was the hot hand of the day for his team. He had a 75% efficiency (6/8 3p) which is more than great! On the other hand, Mexico’s forward/center, Hector Hernadez attempted seven 3-pointers and made only one (17%).
  • The “double-double” players. Six players registred a double – double in the first day of the World Cup. Those are Yanick Moreira (16p, 10r), Andray Blatche (28p, 12r), Walter Herrmann (12p, 10r), Andres Nocioni (18p, 11r), Gorgui Dieng (21p, 14r) and Mark Gasol (15p, 10r).
  • Finland scored just 2 points in the second quarter of the game against USA! Great defense by the Americans or a really bad offensive night for Finland? Let’s just say it was a combination of both.
  • France and Brazil scored combined 128 points, 14 more than the USA, which scored 114!
  • The perfect and the zero! Lithuania’s super star, Jonas Valanciunas, was perfect from the floor with 8/8 (100%) FG. On the other hand, Finland’s shooting guard, Sasu Salin didn’t manage to score (0/8 FG).
  • Philippines attempted the most FG’s in a game (79)! USA and Korea follow with 73, but in 40 minutes.
  • Centers beat the guards! The Gasol brothers beat the Dragic brothers, if you take into account the stats. Pau and Mark had 48 points, 18 rebounds and 6 assists, while Goran and Zoran had 31 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
