Sergio Scariolo was recently hired as an assistant coach by the Toronto Raptors, however, he will remain also the coach of the Spanish national team for next season.
The Spanish federation clarified today that Scariolo will remain on the helm of the team during the FIBA “Windows”. According to the press release: The Executive Committee of the Spanish Basketball Federation has met at its headquarters with Sergio Scariolo to analyze together how his hiring by the Toronto Raptors will affect his obligations as the men’s national team head coach. During this meeting, Sergio Scariolo has assured the members of the FEB management committee that he will fulfill all the obligations of his position and he has confirmed that his commitment to the NBA team allows him to be present in the Qualification Windows. The national team will compete for the World Cup qualifiers during September, November and February.
Scariolo commented the following on his Twitter profile: “Very excited that I will complete my contract with the Spanish Federation and coach the national team until 2020. Thanks to @Raptors for their generosity and for understanding my desire to keep coaching Spanish NT until 2020!”
