After winning the NBA championship title with the Toronto Raptors, Marc Gasol wants to add another prize in his trophy case this summer: A medal with the Spanish national team in the upcoming World Cup (China, 31/8 – 15/9).
“I’m going to try to keep this successful streak going by coming back home from China with something, a medal for example, that would be amazing,” Gasol said to FIBA. “I just won an NBA title, and I really want more and more. I’ve won a lot with the national team since I first played at senior level, but I want to keep winning and be with the guys to keep making history for Spanish basketball.”
While Marc Gasol, a former World champion in 2006, will be present in the World Cup, his older brother Pau has been sidelined with an injury and won’t play in the tournament. “He would kill to be in the World Cup,” Spanish national team head coach Sergio Scariolo has said.
Marc perfectly understands how his brother feels.
“I know he [Pau Gasol] is disappointed at not being able to play this summer, but he’ll support us and be our first fan. We’re going to construct a very good roster, and despite Pau’s absence, we’ll have a lot of talented players and will play with the same goals of winning and making Spain shine at international level once again. I love to play with my brother in the national team, and we have to do our best to qualify for the next Olympics so we’ll wear the national team jersey together again.”
