The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 officially tips off on August 31 across China. This marks the 18th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup and as part of this highly anticipated tournament FIBA has joined forces with the Pistoletto Foundation Cittadellarte to bring art to basketball.
The unveiling of this unique art piece will take place at a special ceremony during the Final Weekend of the World Cup in Beijing, and will be attended by FIBA dignitaries as well as representatives from the Pistoletto Foundation and also officials from the Local Organizing Committee.
Michelangelo Pistoletto, pictured below, is an Italian artist who is the creator of the Third Paradise – a symbol of three circles that has been displayed all over the world. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential contemporary artists of his generation and a leading proponent of the ‘Arte Povera’, a movement in Italy in the 1960s.
The Third Paradise symbol has been displayed worldwide through various events, platforms and organizations including the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the Louvre in Paris, France and at the Council of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium.
The worlds of sport and art are not all that different. Each medium summons emotion, produces division and creates lasting memories. Both sport and art enable us to express ourselves physically, emotionally and even intellectually, allowing us to connect and communicate with each other around the world, crossing borders, cultures, languages and generations.
Basketball is a global sport that unites people from across the globe, together as equals. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 will bring together 32 countries, taking place in 8 major cities in China, bringing together millions of fans to be part of this unique global event.
Michaelangelo Pistoletto’s Third Paradise symbol unites communities, and through the FIBA Basketball World Cup this cooperation will symbolize the unification of all players, teams, organizations, federations and fans involved.
