The Dominican Republic came in with quite an upset for the Germans and with their 70-68 victory, they can rest on top of Group G (2-0) and with a ticket to the second round of FIBA World Cup in their hands.
“Maybe for a lot of people we were a tournament surprise, but we believed in our job and we are enjoying this moment. But this is only one game, this team can do more things in this World Cup”, stated Nestor Garcia.
Gelvin Solano (8 points, 11 assists) played a key role in the final period, as he paced the Dominican Republic to a six-point advantage (63-69) with less than three minutes to go. Several turnovers by Germany affected their performance in the final minute and with their second loss in the tournament, dreams of advancing are gone.
Victor Liz and Eloy Vargas paced the Dominican Republic’s effort throughout the game, adding 17 and 16 points each.
For Germany (0-2) this is a big blow. Dennis Schroder’s 20-point performance wasn’t enough against the underdogs of Group G and now Henrik Rodl’s squad will face Jordan (0-1) on Thursday for their final game of the tournament.
At the same time, the Dominican Republic takes over France (1-0) in a game that will decide the winner of the group.
