Russia coach Sergey Bazarevich commented on the difference in the number of free throws that his team and Argentina took in the game between the two sides that concluded the first phase in Group B.
“Regarding the warning from FIBA about talking about referees. So, I’m not going to talk about referees but we had 28 fouls and they had 17 and they shot 36 free throws. I’m not talking about referees. No, I’m not talking about referees. We shot 11 free throws and all our game was inside [the paint]. So… I think it was a fact [of the game] too,” Bazarevich said in the post-game presser after the loss of his team. Russia finished second in the Group with a 2-1 record.
Following the win over South Korea, Bazarevich had mentioned that he’s a “fan” of Argentina guard Facu Campazzo. The latter scored 21 points and made some decisive plays on both ends in the final minutes to lead his team to the win over Russia.
“He was up to his level,” Bazarevich said after being asked if he’s still a fan of Campazzo’s game. “He played really good.”
Russia will face Venezuela and Poland in the Group I of the second round of the tournament.
“Our guys are working on scouting reports. They perform really well. I’m talking about Poland. They have experienced guys. Not really a big rotation but the coach (Mike Taylor) is coaching them for a couple of years so they know how to play.”
“We played Venezuela in the tournament in Italy. It’s a tough team. I believe that they are a different team now that they are qualified. We have to play to our 100% in both games,” Bazarevich concluded.
