After the celebrations in Madrid, the Spanish national team attended a press conference, with Sergio Scariolo praising his team for the big success at FIBA World Cup.
“Anything you get is worth a lot more if you share it. We already, by definition, share it within our team because basketball is a team sport, of course, and because there are few teams in the world, of any sport, that are more team than us. We have been able to share it with the fans in Spain, in the streets … We have noticed their support. The players feel that they make many people happy”, said Scariolo.
Although Spain ended up raising the trophy, the initial objective was to return from China with a medal, as Scariolo himself acknowledges: “Against all odds, Spain remains high in respect, admiration and a little in the envy of others”
Like Marc Gasol, Sergio Scariolo’s year has been impressive. The Italian coach was part of the Toronto Raptors coaching staff who won his first ring and now adds a World Championship to his record. However, he mentioned that his work “is always the same ” and that he has not changed his way of training: “The job of the coach and the coaching staff is to coordinate talent and effort and make some decisions. Luckily, in these years most have all been successful. Sometimes you have to make risky decisions. Chemistry as strong as that of this team allowed us to take some more risk and go more to the limit“.
