BC Donetsk reached Eurocup’s quarterfinals this year – five years after it was founded – where they met Lietuvos Rytas. That was the end of their European adventure, which began with Euroleague’s preliminary round. But for the Ukrainians this was not even the slightest reason to be depressed. They had a much more important thing to worry about: their future.
At 19th of March, two men with automatic weapons ambushed the 38-year old Sergey Dvadechko, the guy who made Donetsk BC one of the fastest-rising teams in Europe and they opened fire while he was driving back home, from work (he is the deputy chairman of “Soyuz Bank” ). Ηe wasn’t even injured, because he was feeling sick that day and he laid down at the backseats, so he only saw… a rain of bullets. Something didn’t happen with his driver and his bodyguard -both got injured.
His first move, after the incident, was to leave Ukraine -something he did the next day, after he left the hospital, when he left the country together with his family- and to apply for an asylum in a western European country.
You see, coincidence is something which happens only once. Not… three times. Then you only have facts. Dvadechko facts had him as the third one (from Rodovid Bank’s ex administration -he was vice president, when the accusations about the embezzlement of budget funds of the amount 2.141.663.000 euros, arose and long before the bank was recapitalized by the state) who was attacked. The first one got away with multiple injuries and the second one was killed.
For this season Donetsk BC has absolutely no problem. But, nobody knows what will happen after the end of this season, cause they will not have their president, their main sponsor, the guy who re-invented them.
