Argentinians fought with all their power and they stayed close to the United States, till the third period (47-40, at the halftime), when Kevin Durant started (with 3-pointers he marked 70-53) what was ended by Carmelo Anthony with 4 consecutive 3-pointers at the last period (93-64), five minutes remaining for the end of the game. Team USA won 109-83 and they reached the Final of the Olympics for the 15th time!
The third time for the two of them!
It was four years ago, when Team USA (known back then as “Redeem Team”) met Spain at the Olympic Men’s Basketball tournament final. And… they redeemed!
They pulled out an undefeated performance and they got the gold medal, after they beat the Spaniards by 118-107. That was not they only time the Spaniards lost to the United States: they also met in 1984, at Los Angeles where… the home-court team won by 96-65.
The United States is 13-1 all time in Olympic gold medal games. The only lose was in 1972, against USSR (back then). Spain wants to be the second team to beat the US.
As their leader, Pau Gasol wrote on Twitter, few minutes after their qualification to the final “on Sunday we will fight for the gold. This team is not satisfied by getting to the final. We’re living a very special moment! #London2012”.
