The 2019-2020 Greek League season will be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was taken in a teleconference meeting between the Greek Clubs Association (ESAKE) and the Greek Professional Players Union (PSAK).
The championship had previously been postponed until March 31.
While ESAKE and PSAK have both agreed that the league will be definitely shut down, the two sides have reached an impasse regarding the players’ salaries. Following a previous suggestion by PSAk to reduce salaries to 80%, ESAKE proposed for the payments to be decreased to 70%. PSAK asked for the agents’ fees to be reduced instead and contracts up to 20,000 euros to be paid in full.
ESAKE and PSAK are expected to hold another meeting on the matter.
In the meantime, the league is looking for a way to validate the standings, something that will require a modification on the league’s charter. Right now Panathinaikos is leading the standings while PAOK Thessaloniki and Aris Thessaloniki are the two teams holding the two relegation spots at the bottom of the table.
