Olympiacos Piraeus won the 2022 Greek SuperCup title by defeating archrival Panathinaikos Athens 67 – 52 in the Final of the competition. The Reds have now captured their third consecutive title in the same year, a first-time achievement since the club’s triple-double of 1997.
The frontline duo of Sasha Vezenkov (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Moustapha Fall (12 points, five rebounds, game-high five assists) were the two pillars of Olympiacos’ win. The latter had also a powerful defensive presence and was later named tournament MVP.
After a balanced first half (34-37) with ups and downs for both teams, Giorgos Bartzokas’ players had a dominant third quarter to lead 43 – 56 with ten minutes to play. They went up 45-61 early in the fourth period and proceeded to easily retain a double-digit advantage for the rest of the match.
Save from some action by Paris Lee (12 points, four assists) and Derrick Williams (10 points), Panathinaikos didn’t have any reliable offensive options, partially also due to the absence of injured playmaker Nate Wolters. Newcomer Marius Grigonis had the biggest issues connecting to the basket, finishing with 0-9 from the field.
Panathinaikos’ problems against Olympiacos’ defense were becoming bigger the more the game progressed and the Greens ended up scoring just 18 points in the second half.
