Determined to add to the win column of Greece’s Basket League, Panathinaikos rocked Promitheas, 75-44, in a rescheduled fixture of Regular Season Round 5 held in Patras Monday.
With his twin brother, Panagiotis Kalaitzakis (back) stuck on the injury list, Giorgos Kalaitzakis dropped 16 points, a new personal best for the 2022-23 season.
Captain Giorgos Papagiannis and Derrick Williams put in ten points apiece. Polish import Mateusz Ponitka followed with nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and one steal in Patras.
A minor leg injury sidelined Paris Lee. Unregistered Marius Grigonis and Andrew Andrews also sat out, as did Nikos Pappas. From jumping to 8-2, a couple of games behind the league’s leader and archrival Olympiacos, the Greens will move forward staying on the road and colliding with FC Bayern Munich Thursday. Four losses in a row, including the most recent to Olympiacos at home, dropped them to 6-10 ahead of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 17.
The only double-digit scorer for the hosts was Arnoldas Kulboka. The Lithuanian guard ended up with 16 points to his name. His side was forced down to 4-6.
Earlier action in the top division of Greece saw Lavrio Megabolt blow out Ionikos, 95-63. Savion Flagg went for 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the delayed contest of Round 10. Both teams are now 2-8.
Round 11 of the Regular Season is coming up this weekend. The team coached by Dejan Radonjic plays host to Peristeri bwin Saturday. Highlighting Sunday’s schedule, Olympiacos welcomes AEK in SEF, the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
