Dinos Mitoglou scored 16 out of his game-high 20 points in the second half while grabbing 10 rebounds to lead Panathinaikos Athens past Olympiacos Piraeus 66 – 54 on the road. This was the first win of the Greens this season over their archrival after two losses in the Greek SuperCup and the EuroLeague opener.
Thanks to this victory, Panathinaikos improved to 4-0 while Olympiacos dropped to 3-1, losing its first Greek League regular season game after November 2021 (to Panathinaikos).
Panathinaikos made quite the swing from trailing 27 – 18 in the mid of the second period to close that gap at 31 – 28 at halftime and then move up 40 – 45 near the end of the third quarter. Olympiacos tied the score at 45 but saw their opponents pulling away again, while struggling to find offensive solutions overall and having no answer for Mitoglou’s impact on both ends of the floor. The Reds were also flat-out unable to make free throws, finishing with 4-16, including 0-6 in the final quarter.
With the score 50 – 52 and 6:18 to play, Panathinaikos moved beyond shooting distance, closing the game with a 4 – 12 run.
Kyle Guy contributed 12 points to Panathinaikos’ win and Juancho Hernangomez had 10 points plus five rebounds. In his first return to Piraeus with Panathinaikos, former Olympiacos guard Kostas Sloukas posted five points (2-9 shots) but also five assists and five rebounds.
Nigel Williams-Goss (14 points) and Isaiah Canaan (14 points six rebounds) scored in double figures for Olympiacos.
