Lavrio stayed close up until halfway through the fourth quarter, dragging by only two points (73-71) against Olympiacos, but the Greek powerhouse eventually managed to escape with a 16-0 run, winning the first game of the season 93-75 on the road.

Sasha Vezenkov was crucial for Georgios Bartzoka’s team, leading his squad in scoring with 25 points over 8/9 from two-point range while also grabbing 9 rebounds and getting fouled 8 times. Filip Petrusev followed him with 16 points and 5 rebounds, contributing to his team’s win.

For the home side, Taz Sherman had a team-high losing effort of 13 points but struggled shooting from the field, putting up only 4/12. 22-year-old rookie Sam Griffin had the same amount of points.

Earlier in Round 1 of this year’s Greek Basket League, Panathinaikos managed to get an away victory against Karditsa, especially thanks to a double-double by Omer Yurtseven.

After suffering an opening-round defeat to Fenerbahce on the road, which led to a heated clash between head coaches Sarunas Jasikevicius and Georgios Bartzokas, the red-and-white Greek side will now host Zalgiris Kaunas on October 11 at Peace and Friendship Stadium.
