The lineup of the 2016 Greek Basket League semifinals was completed last night, with Panathinaikos and AEK joining Olympiacos and Aris, that had already qualified.
By defeating Kolossos 80 – 71 in Rhodes, Panathinaikos swept its way to the best four teams in the league, albeit not without some difficulty in the match. The hosts were quite close, 69 – 71, three minutes before the end of the game, but a 2-8 partial score for the Greens got the job done for them. James Gist recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for Panathinaikos.
Thanks to 10 points and 11 rebounds by Dimitris Mavroeidis, AEK bettered PAOK 61 – 54 in Athens, and will now play in the semifinals for the first time after 11 years! Despite the absences of Vassiliadis and Schortsanitis, the “black and whites” fought hard in the first half, which ended 29 – 27. With key baskets by Brown, AEK took 10-point lead, 49-39 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, which was proven to be enough for them and too much for their opponents.
