Panathinaikos prevailed over Olympiacos in the first derby of the season in the Greek league with 71-68. The game was played without fans due to Olympiacos‘ punishment from last season’s finals.
Nick Calathes was the leading scorer for the Greens with 14 points. KC Rivers, who changed the route of the game followed with 13, same as James Gist.
For Olympiacos, Jamel McLean finished with 18 points and 4 rebounds. Vasilis Spanoulis and Brian Roberts were missing from the home team, while Lukas Lekavicius was out of action for Panathinaikos.
After a nearly perfect balance in the first half, which sent the teams to the lockers at 40-36. Multiple ties followed in the second half, as no team could grab the initiative of the game. There was tension and even an incident between coach Giannis Sfairopoulos and Kostas Papanikolaou that ended with the Greek forward leaving the game.
Olympiacos kept a 66-61 lead with 4 minutes to go, yet soon enough Rivers reduced to 2 points with a long-range shot, then helped Panathinaikos surpass 67-66.
