Olympiacos guard Janis Strelnieks is ruled out for the rest of the season, the team’s head coach David Blatt revealed.
“Unfortunately, Janis hasn’t been able to practice basketball since the national team injury eight weeks ago,” Blatt said in the post-game presser of Olympiacos‘ away win over AEK Athens. “It was a serious muscle injury that didn’t respond well to his attempts to coming back. He’ll be OK eventually but he won’t play anymore this year because obviously, we shut him down for the rest of the year and we brought in Will because we couldn’t wait anymore.”
After the addition of Will Cherry, Olympiacos is not able to make any other changes of players on its active roster according to the Greek league rules. Strelnieks got injured in the World Cup Qualifiers 80 – 74 win of Latvia in Montenegro in Podgorica.
The 30-year-old guard stayed on the court despite being hurt and finished with 25 points and dished out 10 assists. Despite his efforts, Latvia was eliminated since they needed a win of 9+ points in order to advance in the World Cup.
