BERLIN– Fenerbahce Beko star guard Scottie Wilbekin made his self criticism and assumed his own share of responsibility following the loss of his team to Panathinaikos Athens in the EuroLeague Final Four opener.
“I think turnovers were a big part,” Wilbekin told Eurohoops. “Me personally, I didn’t give what I normally give to the team. I think that hurt us a lot.”
Wilbekin was referring to the fact that he finished the game with an abysmal 1 out of 10 (1-5 2-pointers, 0 – 5 triples) from the field. He didn’t manage to at least contribute some playmaking, posting just two assists for four turnovers.
These numbers were a far cry from the 13.2 points on pretty solid shooting (5 – 10 2-pointers, 16 – 36 threes) that Wilbekin had in the playoffs vs. AS Monaco to help Fener reach the Final Four.
While Fener returned to the tournament after 2019, this was the first EuroLeague Final Four for Wilbekin. His big expectations were left unfulfilled.
“It’s just tough because I want to play better,” Wilbekin said. “Help my teammates. Take some pressure off of them. You learn from it and move forward. Hopefully, I’ll be back here and be better.”
